Lessons from the Field #14

The Plan Will Fail. The Mission Can’t.

Last Friday was a reminder that leadership rarely happens when everything goes according to plan.

Flight delays.

Mechanical issues.

Missed connections.

Gate changes.

Stress.

Frustration.

A schedule that seemed to fall apart one piece at a time.

At several points throughout the day, it would have been easy to focus on everything that was going wrong.

But leadership teaches us an important lesson:

Don’t become so attached to the plan that you lose sight of the mission.

The plan was to have a smooth travel day.

The mission was to bring Fable home.

The plan failed multiple times.

The mission succeeded.

The same thing happens in business. Projects get delayed. Priorities change. Markets shift. People leave. Budgets get cut. The leaders who succeed are not the ones who cling to the original plan. They are the ones who stay committed to the mission and adapt along the way.

Great leaders understand that flexibility is not weakness. It is resilience.

The destination matters more than the route.

This week, ask yourself:

Are you focused on protecting the plan, or accomplishing the mission?

Because sometimes the most important leadership lesson is learning the difference.

Lead with purpose. Adapt with confidence. Stay focused on the mission.
