Lessons from the Field #3
Lessons from the Field #3
The Field Tells the Truth
You can learn a lot in a meeting.
But the field?
The field tells the truth.
I’ve sat in plenty of conversations where everything sounded right:
“We’re staffed.”
“Training is complete.”
“Store is customer ready.”
And then I walk the location…
…and immediately see the reality.
• Coffee not set for peak
• Fountain down or understocked
• Coverage gaps during rush
• Associates present—but not trained to standard
• Daily routines inconsistent or skipped
Nothing catastrophic.
But enough to tell you quickly:
The standard isn’t being held.
That’s the difference between reporting performance
and running a business.
Early in my career, I relied on updates.
Now, I validate in the field.
Because execution doesn’t live in dashboards—
it lives in the details.
When standards aren’t clear in the field,
teams create their own version of them.
And those versions are never as strong as what you intended.
Strong leaders don’t just visit stores.
They:
• Walk with purpose
• Address gaps in the moment
• Reset expectations on the spot
• Follow up until execution is consistent
Because the field doesn’t lie.
It reflects:
• What you prioritize
• What you inspect
• And what you’re willing to let slide
So when performance is off, I don’t start with a report.
I start with a question:
“What would I see if I walked the store right now?”
Expectation
Validate execution in the field—don’t assume it.
Standards are only real when they are consistently seen and sustained.
Leader Action
• Walk stores with intention—focus on the basics first
• Address gaps in real time
• Reinforce what “good” looks like every time
• Follow up until it’s consistent—not occasional
• Verify performance yourself—don’t rely on reports alone
Because at the end of the day…
The field will always tell you the truth.
The question is whether you act on it.
