Lessons from the Field #4: Leaders Don’t Drift

In operations, nothing stays the same.

You’re either getting better…

or you’re slowly getting worse.

Most breakdowns don’t happen all at once.

They happen over time.

A missed follow-up.

A delayed conversation.

A standard that isn’t reinforced “just this once.”

And little by little… things start to slip.

Not enough to notice right away.

But enough to change the outcome.

No store wakes up one day and decides to struggle.

It drifts there.

Routines get looser.

Urgency fades.

Accountability softens.

Until one day you walk in and realize…

This isn’t where we used to be.

Strong leaders don’t wait for things to break.

They pay attention to what’s changing.

They:

• Stay close to the business

• Reinforce expectations consistently

• Step in early—before small issues grow

Because they understand:

What isn’t actively led… will drift.

This week, don’t just look for problems.

Look for what’s slipping.

What standard isn’t as tight as it used to be?

Where has urgency slowed down?

What are you allowing today that you wouldn’t have before?

Then reset it—immediately.

Discipline is the difference.

Great leaders don’t wait for failure.

They stop the drift before it starts.
