Lessons from the Field #6: “You Don’t Build a Business. You Build Leaders.”

Early on, I thought my job was to run great stores.

Hit the numbers.

Fix the problems.

Be the one people could count on.

And for a while—that worked.

Until it didn’t.

Because the moment you become the answer to everything…

you become the bottleneck to anything.

That’s when I learned:

You don’t build a business. You build leaders—and they build the business.

If your team needs you for every decision, every issue, every escalation…

you don’t have a strong operation.

You have dependency.

Real leadership looks different.

It’s:

– Letting go of control so others can step up

– Coaching instead of correcting every time

– Allowing people to struggle just enough to grow

– Building confidence, not just competence

Because if you’re doing it right…

The Region runs when you’re not there.

The team leads when you’re not in the room.

And the business grows without you in the middle of it.

That’s not losing control.

That’s building something bigger than you.

Your success isn’t measured by how much you do.

It’s measured by how well your people perform without you.
